The Power of Storytelling in Times of Change

explainer video, nonprofit video, storytelling marketing

Over the past several weeks, we’ve seen coronavirus (COVID-19) shift, unsettle, and generally upend our daily lives, our communities, and our world as a whole. Changes like this call for fast, accurate communication. It also calls for compelling storytelling to capture the hearts and minds of your audience.

In this time of turmoil, mission-based organizations must continue pushing their messages forward. In fact, the COVID-19 pandemic has shed light on many issues. Suddenly, people have become much more aware of the fragility of society and the systems that hold it together, especially for the most vulnerable. The situation has also revealed how interconnected we are, and it’s clearer than ever that we are all in this together. Organizations who can move quickly can leverage the significance of this moment to drive change.

So what does storytelling have to do with all of this? Stories are an essential way humans communicate and share meaning with each other. Using a strong narrative can make a lasting connection with your audience. So ask yourself the questions: What story is your organization trying to tell? How does it fit into the situation we are in? How does your message fit into the lives of actual people? How could you frame your message with a narrative, with characters, with a beginning, middle, and end?

Whether your goals are to raise money or simply spread awareness, now is the time to act. More than ever, people are paying attention.

Example: COVID-19 and Racism

Our team is used to moving quickly. After all, we can complete an animation within 24 hours, from the seed of an idea to the final files. So, as information and strategies change hourly, we’ve been doing what we do best: thinking about how our explainer videos can help address both the issues that are happening right this moment and their underlying causes.

One thing that we noticed–and we’re definitely not alone in this–was the way the coronavirus was talked about by the press and people in power. Namely, it’s been called “the Chinese virus,” leading to a increase in abuse and hate crimes aimed at Asian people in the USA.

So, we worked quickly to amplify the story that we know to be true: language is powerful and we need to protect the people most impacted by this virus. Check out the video we made below:
