This tutorial will overview the “waving flag” effect, and cover how to export your gif. You will need Adobe After Effects. Photoshop is also used, but not required.
1. Bring your art into After Effects. (We created this in Photoshop). Make sure there is some transparent space around your image.
2. Create your composition. (We’ll be using a 720x720px square)
3. Bring your art into the composition and adjust the size. In the “Effects and Presets” tab search for “Wave Warp.” Drag that onto your layer.
4. Set wave height to -10, and width to 117. In the “Pinning” section, select “left edge.”
5.Watch your looping your animation by pressing the space bar. To export your gif in After Effects follow the steps below.
To export in Photoshop you can follow from Step 6 in our “Bouncing Heart Gif Tutorial”
6. Go to Export>Add to Adobe Media Encoder Queue
7. Click on the highlighted section under format, and open export settings.
8. Change to “Animated Gif” Save and press the green play button to export!
That’s it! Now share your gif with the world.
As you’re spreading rainbows this month, take time also to remember the history behind why we wave the Pride flag. The first demonstrations during what would become this celebratory month were resilient riots led by Black queer activists following a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village. It is because of the continued resilience of queer activists that we gather to wave this flag, in reverence for both the past victories and the hard fights still to be won for queer liberation.
This version of the pride flag was designed in 2018 by Daniel Quasar. The black and brown stripes represent LGBTQIA+ communities of color, and the light blue, pink and white represent the trans community.
