What Does it Mean to Be a Benefit Corporation (B Corp)?

There are lots of reasons to be a B Corp, but one in particular speaks to us at Next Day Animations: it’s not only possible, but imperative to do good and do well at the same time. That is, we can be a profitable company AND actively work to make the world better through our products, policies, and business model. 

So, what exactly does that look like in practice? B Lab, the organization who certifies B Corporations, breaks responsible business practices into five categories: governance, workers, community, environment, and customers. 

GOVERNANCE

Our business policies and practices all align with our core values of Clarity, Partnership, Inventiveness, and Authenticity. A transparent leadership model, and relatively flat organizational structure, help keep us accountable to those policies and practices.

WORKERS

We take seriously the financial, physical, professional, and social well-being of our employees and contractors – and it shows. We’ve been named a Great Place to Work for 3 years in a row. We do this through fair wages, and perks like a wellness reimbursement that can be used on things like massage, acupuncture, therapy, or gym memberships.

COMMUNITY

We invest in the economic and social well-being of our communities through our Nonprofit Grant program, where a winning nonprofit organization receives a free 2-minute whiteboard explainer video (application is still open!). And we do it through our Illustrating Awesomeness Scholarship, where we give money to young women or gender non-conforming individuals of color who are actively working to change the world. Our staff also volunteered a total of 424.5 hours in 2020. Wow!

ENVIRONMENT

We consider ourselves stewards of the environment, which is why we offer a public transportation reimbursement to team members who take public transit or bike to work. We’re also a Bicycle Friendly Business. And we don’t have the exact stats on this one, but we estimate that, since working from home, we’ve composted one metric crap ton of banana peels and coffee grounds.

CUSTOMERS

We’re constantly striving to improve the value of our products and services for our clients. We bring value not only through our products but also through our process. We think that the way we make videos is just as important as the quality of the videos themselves.
